  • Innovation and automation at DHL Supply Chain
    In January 2018, DHL Supply Chain deployed six autonomous mobile robots (AMR) from Locus Robotics in an 18,000-square-foot area in a facility handling medical devices. Long considered one of the most innovative of the world`s third-party logistics (3PL) providers, DHL Supply Chain understood a lot was still to be learned from an immature technology, but it wanted to get ahead of the curve and its competition. Fast forward, and DHL recently announced it has deployed more than 2,000 Locus bots in North America and has surpassed 100 million units picked across more than a dozen North American facilities. There have been a lot of learnings along the way. The same organization is now tackling autonomous lift trucks. As it did with AMRs, DHL Supply Chain is starting small, with a fleet of nine autonomous lift trucks (Crown Equipment) in an 800,000-square-foot facility in Findlay, Ohio. As with the AMRs, the initial application is limited to a portion of the 800,000-square-foot facility and is managing a select group of mid- to slow-moving SKUs. The application is also measured, limited to the putaway and retrieval of pallets from double-deep pallet rack going up six locations. However, if history is any guide, we can expect those numbers to expand in the coming years as the technology matures, and as DHL Supply Chain gains experience and can apply its learnings to other processes. In fact, the organization is already piloting a competing technology in another facility, as it did with AMRs, and eyeing additional locations where it services the same client as in Findlay. As with AMRs, operational reasons called for bringing in more automation, says Mark Smith, senior vice president of operations. [In 2018 and 2019, before the pandemic, labor challenges were gaining momentum, and we knew we had to do something to change the face of that game," says Smith. But, so was staying ahead of the competition by having a seat at the table in the advancement of a promising technology. That is also the case with autonomous lift trucks, says Sally Miller, CIO North America for DHL Supply Chain. She notes that DHL has accelerated its digitalization program in response to 12 different trends it monitors and believes will impact the supply chain. Examples of those trends include data analytics, visibility and autonomous vehicles. [Innovation is the future of our business," she says. Smith and Miller both acknowledge that autonomous lift trucks have a way to go before they are routinely deployed. But they also expect the technology to mature quickly, especially as more vehicles are deployed in the field, much like the way AMR technology expanded. [Operationally, we`re probably two to five years from where it will evolve into our sites commonly," says Smith. [Right now, people are more productive than the autonomous vehicles when they`re working. But we know it`s just a matter of time before [the vehicles] gain efficiency and productivity, and we deploy more of them."

  • Tailor lift truck leasing to your fleet
    Leasing has become a common way of acquiring lift trucks, especially for busy, high-volume sites for many reasons. For one thing, it frees up capex for other projects, like adding buildings or production machinery. Second, it offers a preplanned timeframe for transitioning to newer equipment, rather than trying to squeeze a full lifespan out of older units that likely aren`t as productive as newer ones. [For the heavier use sites where lift truck use is an integral part of the business, where they are running lift trucks all day for one or more shifts, [leasing] is the primary way of acquiring new equipment and even some used equipment," says Duane Hardy, president of Forklift Systems, a lift truck dealership based in Nashville. [Leasing has multiple advantages, including preserving capital budget," says Hardy. [But another factor businesses like about it is that you can make a decision about the ideal time to replace the equipment based on the application and expected hours you`ll be running it and find a lease arrangement to match, knowing you`ll be replacing it at the end of that term with a new unit." Hardy says at lower volume sites with relatively low run-time hours a capital purchase can still make good sense, but for busier operations, leasing is a streamlined way to acquire and budget for a fleet of newer lift trucks that are less likely to have unexpected downtime. [We believe in it for our own business, for our service trucks," says Hardy. Leasing does have its nuances, even for sites inclined toward it. One piece of advice Hardy has is that it helps to know the different applications and use patterns for different trucks in your fleet, and tailor leases accordingly. For example, trucks in receiving might see very heavy use, and need more hours built into the lease, while trucks used for maintenance or other purposes might see significantly lighter use, so a lower cost lease with a tighter hour limit might do fine for these units. Another leasing-related trend is power by the hour, a flexible contract arrangement in which fees can flex based on how much a truck actually gets used. The concept has begun to catch on in Europe, notes David Jarr, general manager of dealer development at lift truck OEM Mitsubishi Logisnext Americas. [In the United States, power-by-the-hour or pay-per-use type approaches are evolving and gaining some traction as certain OEMs and independent dealerships provide similar offerings to targeted users," Jarr says. [However, these payment models have not been as heavily promoted in the United States as it has been by Jungheinrich in Europe." With any lease or rental decision, adds Jarr, data helps tailor optimal arrangements. [Fleet assessment is a must for any company looking to lease lift trucks," he says. [It`s important to ensure that the right type of lease will provide value through its expected life cycle. Understanding the range of lift trucks in the fleet you own and how the trucks are used can make all the difference in avoiding excessive maintenance costs, overtime expenses or trucks becoming obsolete through the lease period." John Winter, chief operating officer at Concentric, which specializes in providing forklift and backup power for companies, notes the technology to support power by the hour exists, though it`s early days for the model. [It`s not yet a major trend, but a select few companies are ready to match their equipment costs to the revenue/pallet throughput," says Winter.

    An impartial pallet buyers` guide Pick up any materials handling or logistics magazine today and you`re likely to see articles and advertisements comparing the pros and cons of plastic and wooden pallets. For the most unbiased view possible, Eureka`s Mark Nicholson has been speaking to a company that manufactures, sells and equally promotes both kinds. [Our profit margins on plastic and wood are fairly similar, so we have no vested interest in steering buyers one way or the other," says Chris Shawyer, General Manager at Southampton-based Associated Pallets. [The best pallet for each of them depends on their exact application. Most people already know what type they want. If they`re not sure, our advisers will ask detailed questions about how the pallets are to be used and will then make a recommendation." He continues: [We tend to get more requests for wooden pallets, mainly because they are much cheaper than plastic, but price shouldn`t be the only consideration. Both materials have advantages and disadvantages which have to be weighed up. In some cases, the right choice is obvious; in others, customers must decide which factors are most important to them." With advice from Associated Pallets, we have put together the following comparison of plastic and wooden pallet properties. We then present a simple checklist aimed at matching these to the needs of common applications. Pallet properties Cleanliness and hygiene For situations where pallets need to be thoroughly washed, plastic has the advantage thanks to its non-porous material – which also shrugs off spillages and odours. Wood can be cleaned, with care, but its absorbency is an issue. It can be structurally weakened by water and contaminated by absorption of spilled liquids. Nevertheless, wood is still suitable for most hygienic industries, like food, but plastic takes over where extreme cleanliness is needed. It also looks neat and clean. Regulatory compliance There is a long list of countries, including the EU as a block, which require all wooden pallets and wooden packaging entering them to meet `ISPM 15` regulations. This is to prevent the spread of diseases and pests. To comply, they must be heat-treated and officially stamped. Plastic pallets are exempt from these requirements, as their material cannot be infested by microbes, moulds and insects. Durability Under normal circumstances, plastic pallets will have a much longer lifespan than wooden. Their material is hardwearing and resistant to accidental damage. Heavy knocks may weaken and distort a wooden pallet`s structure, while plastic pallets are more likely to absorb shocks and bounce back into shape. However, when damage occurs, wooden pallets are much easier to repair, while damaged plastic pallets may have to be scrapped. Impacts on wooden pallets may result in loose nails, splinters and sharp pieces of broken wood which can damage or contaminate goods and injure people. On a smaller scale, rubbing, scratching and banging of wooden surfaces during everyday handling can be enough to release dust and small wood fragments. It will not be a complete upheaval so much as accelerating changes already in the pipeline – if change really is going to come. Ruari McCallion reports.
